Retired Judge James S. Burns died of throat cancer Thursday morning at the Queen’s Medical Center at the age of 79. He leaves behind his wife Emme Tomimbang, son Brendan and daughter Meredith.

There’s an interesting tidbit about the late Judge James S. Burns, who died this week, in the biography of his father, Hawaii’s first Democratic governor. It’s illustrative of the family’s affinity for Hawaii’s multiculturalism.
“John A. Burns: The Man and His Times,” written by Dan Boylan and T. Michael Holmes, relates one story of the elder Burns and his wife, paralyzed by polio and pregnant with James.
Seishiro Okazaki was a massage therapist and healer who prepared Mrs. Burns for delivery of a healthy son. And in tribute, that son, James Stanton Burns, added Seishiro as a middle name.
