Armored in her gear under the midday heat, Hawaii catcher Heather Cameron appreciated Rainbow Wahine pitcher Dana Thomsen’s efficiency on Sunday.
Thomsen got her defense back in the shade of the dugout with another quick performance in the UH softball team’s 5-0 win over Marist to close the Outrigger Spring Fling Tournament at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Cameron had the best view of Thomsen’s third shutout of the season in which the junior struck out seven and walked one while limiting the Red Foxes to four hits.
“Definitely pretty hot out there but she did really well,” Cameron said. “Her changeup worked really well … and her screwball is just always her really good go-to. She’s good at adjusting with her screwballs and that was really effective because they couldn’t hit it.”
Cameron also went 2-for-3 at the plate with two doubles and drove in a run in the groundout in the fourth inning, when UH broke a scoreless tie with a three-run outburst.
UH (15-9) closed the Spring Fling at 4-1, the lone blemish a 1-0 loss to No. 20 Utah on Thursday, and the Wahine have allowed more than one run just once in their past eight games with four shutouts in that stretch. Thomsen followed Brittany Hitchcock’s shutout of Marist on Saturday by blanking the Red Foxes (9-8) in 1 hour, 49 minutes.
“It was kind of a lethargic beginning. The heat was really affecting us,” UH coach Bob Coolen said. “But Dana came through. … She really is moving the ball and her and Cam are working really well together.”
Marist right-hander Megan Beiermeister had some help in keeping the Wahine off the scoreboard through three innings when UH’s Angelique Ramos was thrown out at the plate attempting to score on Cameron’s first double of the game to end the second inning.
But the Wahine loaded the bases in the fourth and took the lead when Callee Heen’s bouncer to the right side bounded off the shoulder of second baseman Brandi Coon, allowing two runs to score on the single.
“We finally put some things together … and if you put the ball in play on the ground a lot of things can happen,” Coolen said.
UH added to the lead in the fifth when Sarah Muzik’s looper over third base fell in to score Chardonnay Pantastico from third. Danielle Garcielita scored the game’s final run on a wild pitch.
The Wahine have a day off today then open the Hawaii Pacific Health Rainbow Wahine Classic — their final tournament before Big West play — on Tuesday against Connecticut. Marist also is entered in the five-day tournament along with Harvard and Purdue.
