Headed for another close game late, Hawaii ace Brendan Hornung finally got some run support at home.
The Rainbow Warriors scored three times in the bottom of the seventh inning after San Jose State nearly tied it and Hornung went the distance for his second win in a 6-2 victory over San Jose State on Thursday night at Les Murakami Stadium.
A crowd of 1,515 treated to a fireworks show in the sky beyond center field in the top of the seventh inning saw the Rainbow Warriors improve to 12-8 for their best 20-game start to the season since joining the Big West.
Hornung (2-2), who had gotten eight runs of support in four home starts coming in, saw the UH lead quadruple in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Josh Rojas and a two-run double by Alex Fitchett for a 6-2 advantage.
“The three runs are huge. That’s a game-changer,” Hornung said. “It lets a lot off your chest and allows you to go out there and get ahead and challenge hitters and if they get a hit, so what, you’re still up three or four runs.”
The senior right-hander went at least eight innings for the third time and notched his second complete game in six starts this season.
He scattered 11 hits and struck out seven with no walks. He threw 66 of his 88 pitches for strikes.
“(San Jose State) is aggressive and will show up for the fastball, so you’ve got to be able to pitch,” Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. “The thing with Brendan is he’s always going to throw strike one and be around the plate, and aggressive teams like that are going to get their hits, but the key for him is no walks.”
San Jose State (9-10) struggled in that department, allowing nine walks and two hit batters.
Adam Fogel went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored and Rojas was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Jake Swiech (1-2) allowed four hits and three runs in 32⁄3 innings to take the loss and the Spartans used four relievers.
Hawaii had chances to blow the game open before the seventh but left the bases loaded in the fourth inning after three walks and a hit batter plated a run.
Fogel, who doubled and scored in the second inning to give UH a 2-0 lead, led off the fifth with a base hit but was caught stealing.
He was the first runner thrown out stealing by catcher Joseph Stefanki in 10 tries this season.
“We left a lot of runs on the table early when they were trying to help us out with some walks and some freebies,” Trapasso said. “It took us a while to take advantage of them finally.”
UH led 3-1 in the seventh when SJSU scored for the second time, bunting in a runner from third with less than two outs.
Hornung, who gave up back-to-back singles to Aaron Pleschner and Shane Timmons with one out, allowed a two-out single to right on a 3-0 pitch to Josh Nashed.
Timmons rounded third and was halfway to home when he was stopped by third base coach Damon Lessler.
Fitchett’s throw in from right one-hopped Ramirez, who was the cut-off man, and Timmons might have scored if he had kept going.
Instead, leadoff hitter Corey Olivet grounded out to short stranding the tying run at third, and Lessler got into a heated argument with Spartans skipper Jason Hawkins during the seventh-inning stretch.
“I think he would have been hung out to dry,” Hornung said. “Plays at home get the crowd pumped and get the team pumped up and I think he would have been hosed at home.”
The ’Bows put the game away after that, with Rojas driving in Kekai Rios, who drew three walks, with a base hit and Fitchett hitting a one-hopper off the wall in left for a two-run double to make it 6-2.
