D’Asha Saiki slugged two home runs and drove in six runs as No. 5 Punahou outlasted No. 4 Maryknoll 13-9 on Saturday at Sand Island State Park.
The Buffanblu ended a two-game skid thanks in large part to the return of ace pitcher Bailey Akimseu, who spent the week on a mainland college trip. Punahou improved to 4-3. Maryknoll dropped to 4-4.
“We got hot. We saw the ball really well today,” Saiki said. “Bailey really stepped up.”
It was an action-filled 2 hours and 48 minutes on a steamy hot morning that got the Buffanblu back on track despite three errors.
“The errors are killing us, but we’re hitting the ball fairly well,” coach Bobby Makahilahila said of his squad’s 14-hit attack. “They stayed together. After going 0-2 earlier this week, this was important.
Maryknoll had its own adversity. Third baseman Sydney Kamakaiwi took a line drive off the bat of Janell Sato off her head in the first inning and was taken to a hospital. She was diagnosed and cleared with no concussion symptoms.
“She has a lump on her forehead. I think she got part of the ball with her glove,” Spartans coach John Uekawa said.
Without Kamakaiwi, their only reserve, catcher Kiana Arcayena, entered the game and starting catcher Baylie Kahele moved to third base.
Akimseu allowed seven earned runs, scattered five hits, struck out one and walked seven in a gritty effort.
“Our pitching coach (Dave Mahelona) told me, ‘She said she wants to finish this’,” Makahilahila said.
McNicoll issued six of her team’s eight walks, leaving in the sixth inning and re-entering in the seventh. She gave up nine runs on six hits with seven strikeouts.
“We need better decision-making on offense and defense, and cut down the walks. Every team is going through that. This is our third game in four days,” Uekawa noted. “We’re a young team with just one senior. We’re learning to lose in order to win.”
Saiki, a sophomore third baseman, broke open a close game with home runs in her last two plate appearances. Punahou led 7-5 entering the top of the sixth inning when Saiki led off with a shot over the center-field fence. After Janell Sato walked and Akimseu singled, Lauryn Tachino’s infield single brought Sato home.
Kawailana Mielke followed with a single to center, plating courtesy runner Ashley Nakagawa for 10-5 lead.
In the seventh, Maya Matsubara led off with a walk and Alyssa Rasmussen’s sacrifice bunt resulted in an infield error. Saiki stepped in and launched a 2-1 pitch from Maia McNicoll over right center for a three-run homer. That opened the margin to eight runs.
Maryknoll scrapped for four runs in the bottom of the seven as fatigue set in for Akimseu, who threw four wild pitches. Logan Carlos belted a solo home run to lead off, and McNicoll (single), Baylie Kahele (single) reached base. McNicoll and Kahele eventually scored on a wild pitches, cutting the lead to 13-9 with just no outs.
Kiana Arcayena’s hard grounder to the bag at third was speared by Saiki for a force out, but Arcayena later scored on another wild pitch. That cut the margin to four runs. Akimseu then retired Rayna Mekaru on a line-out to shortstop, and after Kanoe Tanigawa walked, Akimseu got Kamalei Labasan to ground into a force out at third base to end the game.
