The National Sports Media Association has named Honolulu Star-Advertiser sports reporter Brian McInnis the 2016 Hawaii Sportswriter of the Year.
McInnis, who covers University of Hawaii men’s basketball and women’s soccer, was chosen in a vote by his peers, according to the organization.
Other honorees this year are National Sportscaster of the Year Vin Scully, National Sportswriter of the Year Tom Verducci (Sports Illustrated) and Hall of Fame inductees Linda Cohn (ESPN), Mike Lupica (New York Daily News), the late Frank Gifford and the late Sam Lacy, as well as 105 other state sportswriters and sportscasters of the year.
McInnis graduated from the University of Hawaii in 2005 and joined the Honolulu Star-Bulletin full-time in 2007.
Rob DeMello of KHON was chosen as Hawaii Sportscaster of the Year for the second straight year.
