The man and woman who died in a traffic crash Friday in Kealia, Kauai, have been identified as 28-year-old Markis Carveiro of Kapaa, the driver, and Ashley Gorospe, 26, of Kapaa, a backseat passenger.
The other backseat passenger, a 28-year-old Kapaa woman, and her 2-year-old son, who was sitting in front, remained in critical condition Saturday, according to Kauai County police. The boy was taken to The Queen’s Medical Center.
Shortly before 9 a.m. Friday, a Nissan Cube was heading south on Kuhio Highway, near St. Catherine Cemetery, when it apparently crossed the center line and hit an oncoming delivery truck, police said. Carveiro was pronounced dead at the scene.
The delivery truck driver, a 54-year-old Kapaa man, did not report serious injuries.
Speeding suspected in accident on Maui
Excessive speed is believed to have been a factor in a motorcycle collision in Wailuku that left a 36-year-old Lahaina man dead on Friday evening.
Police said Aaron Burnett was riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle south on Kuihelani Highway when he apparently rear-ended an SUV and lost control of the motorcycle. Burnett fell to the road and was then struck by an oncoming Mazda sedan. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. near Waiko Road.
The driver of the SUV sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene. The driver of the Mazda was not hurt.
