No. 4 Hawaii wins at No. 6 UCLA, earns home playoff match
Senior hitter Kupono Fey put down 13 kills and No. 4 Hawaii clinched hosting duties for an MPSF volleyball tournament quarterfinal on April 15 with a 26-28, 25-23, 25-21, 25-18 victory over No. 6 UCLA today in Los Angeles.
The Rainbow Warriors (23-4, 13-4 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) outblocked the Bruins 10-8, with freshman middle Patrick Gasman in on five and senior middle Hendrik Mol in on four.
Hawaii will be seeded third even if the Warriors lose Saturday’s rematch with the Bruins (17-8,10-7). The worst Hawaii could finish is 13-5 and the best UC Irvine can finish is 13-5. Even if that were to happen, the Warriors have the tiebreaker over the Anteaters.
Hawaii’s quarterfinal opponent will be either Pepperdine, Stanford or USC.
