A 32-year-old North Kohala man turned himself in to police Thursday afternoon after he allegedly rammed a Toyota pickup truck with two occupants inside.
Police responded to a report of a domestic dispute at the intersection of Highway 250 and Kynnersley Road in North Kohala shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday. The victims told police the suspect repeatedly rammed into the pickup truck with his vehicle.
One of the truck’s occupants, a 31-year-old North Kohala woman, was injured. She was taken to North Kohala Community Hospital, where she was treated and released. Police said the other occupant, a 36-year-old Waimea man, was uninjured.
The suspect turned himself in at the North Kohala Police Station and was arrested on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder. Officers also recovered his vehicle.
Inmate caught, faces escape charge
Big Island police have charged a 26-year-old inmate following his reported escape Wednesday from the Hawaii Community Correctional Center.
Howard Hinds was charged Thursday night with one count of second-degree escape.
At 1:23 p.m. Wednesday police got a report of a male inmate running from the facility. At 2:05 p.m. they found Hinds behind a residence on Omao Street, less than a mile away.
Bail for Hinds was set at $10,000. He is awaiting trial on charges of criminal contempt and failure to appear in court.
