Hawaii’s upset of Pepperdine on Saturday slightly affected the rankings for both programs in Monday’s AVCA Collegiate Beach Top 15 poll.
The Rainbow Wahine (21-5) moved up a spot into a tie at No. 5 with Long Beach State (21-5). The 49ers had replaced the SandBows in fifth last week after defeating Hawaii 3-2 at the Big West Challenge on April 1.
Pepperdine (18-2), alone at No. 2 since the March 13 poll, shared the spot with former No. 3 UCLA (25-2) on Monday. Remaining at No. 1 was defending national champion USC (25-0), with Florida State (18-6) staying at No. 4.
Hawaii finishes out its home season with the First Foundation Bank Easter Classic with two duals against Saint Mary’s (16-6). Friday’s match is at 2 p.m. at the Ching Complex courts and Saturday’s match is at 9 a.m at Queen’s Beach.
Florence wins Margaret River Pro
Hawaii’s John John Florence defeated Kolohe Andino to clinch the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro on Saturday in Western Australia.
He outscored Andino 19.03 to 13.60 in the final heat, and beat Australia’s Jack Freestone 19.27 to 10.57 in the semifinal. With the victory, Florence clinches the Jeep Leader jersey heading into Bells Beach. Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons won the women’s title over fellow Aussie Tyler Wright.
UH sailing team places seventh
The University of Hawaii co-ed sailing team finished seventh out of 21 teams at the St. Francis Invitational on Sunday in San Francisco Bay. The women’s squad finished 14th in their division, led by Louise Currie, Megan Zamzow, Caitlin Schadt, and Gianna Bailey. The Rainbow Wahine will compete in the PCCSC Women’s Dinghy Championship in San Diego on Saturday and Sunday.
