The Hawaii Community Development Authority has announced two additional public hearings on proposed changes to the agency’s affordable housing rules in Kakaako.
The state agency announced Thursday that the new hearings before its board will be at 9 a.m. May 17 and May 31 in HCDA’s meeting room at 547 Queen St.
A hearing on May 3 that was slated for 1 p.m. and previously expected to include a possible decision by the board will instead be held at 9 a.m. A decision is now scheduled for the May 31 hearing. Public testimony will be accepted at all three hearings. HCDA drew criticism at an initial March 28 “presentation” hearing on the proposed rule changes because its board decided to have an attorney sit in place of board members and listen to testimony that would be conveyed to the board in a written report.
“The community has told us they would like additional opportunities to testify on this issue and we heard them loud and clear,” Jesse Souki, HCDA’s executive director, said in a statement. “The rules are intended to make the Kakaako district a better place for people of all income levels to live, work and play in, so we want to allow people to have additional opportunities to address the board on this critical issue.”
