The city will narrow four lanes into one lane on a section of Pensacola Street for emergency repairs to shore up deteriorating box culverts under the roadway.
Temporary repairs to the section of Pensacola Street where it crosses Kapiolani Boulevard and Waimanu Street are expected to take several weeks to complete.
This morning, contractors were to cone off and narrow four lanes into one lane in the center of Pensacola Street for motorists during repair work. The Wedding Ring Shop and Chun Wah Kam Noodle Factory are among the businesses along that stretch.
City buses and trucks are prohibited from using that section of the street during repairs.
Robert Kroning, director of the city Department of Design and Construction, said two parallel culvert boxes under the roadway that manage the stormwater drain when it rains showed signs of deterioration. Concrete was observed flaking off from the rebar in a recent inspection. “We need to go in there, shore that up to stabilize the roadway.”
Kroning said emergency repair work is necessary because there’s a possibility the roadway could start “to crumble and cave in.”
Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes and warned to expect delays.
The city plans to do permanent repair work in the future.

Hiker rescued from trail
Maui firefighters rescued a 29-year-old Colorado woman Wednesday at Bamboo Forest trail after she injured her ankle.
The Maui Fire Department said the woman from Denver was hiking shortly after 5 p.m. when she slipped on wet rocks and injured her ankle near the third waterfall along the trail.
The Fire Department deployed its Air 1 helicopter when rescue crews located the hiker about a half-mile above the trailhead.
She was flown to a pasture near Hana Highway, and paramedics took her to Maui Memorial Medical Center to be treated.
