1. “I think that I shall never see, A poem lovely as a tree” — especially if it’s a tree protected by one of these colorfully decorated tree guards from Tree Guards Hawaii.
The metal bands, which keep rodents and other critters from climbing trees, have been decorated Hawaii style with vividly colored depictions of hibiscus, plumeria and honu. Tree Guards Hawaii founder Justin McCoy, who used to work in landscaping with his father, developed them after getting bored with the bland bands you see most of the time.
His creations are available at Hardware Hawaii in Kailua for $24.99 and at his website, treeguardshawaii.com.

2. I’ve long been a fan of Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream, which hydrates skin without feeling heavy. Now the brand has followed the multitasking-product trend and introduced a formula that includes SPF 30 — just in time for the sunny days of summer. It soaks in quickly without any of the typical sunscreen greasiness, tackiness or white sheen. Plus, my skin feels soft and moisturized all day.
Try it out at the Kiehl’s store in Ala Moana Center, where it’s $27.50 for a 1.7-ounce jar or $47.50 for 4.2 ounces.

3. If you value dental hygiene, love animals and want to help protect the environment, give Lush’s Toothy Tabs a try. With catchy and provocative names like Oral Pleasure, Sparkle, Boom! and Miles of Smiles, the U.K. retailer of handmade, vegetarian cosmetics makes it fun to experiment with different flavors.
Simply chew one of the tabs and brush normally with a wet toothbrush. Oral Pleasure is a pleasing combination of lilikoi and rose oil, while Miles of Smiles provides a bold, minty blast. For a bigger kick, Boom! combines cola flavoring with black pepper oil and ground chili.
All are perfect for traveling — no liquid makes this stuff carry-on friendly — and sold in compact, recyclable packaging. Also, Lush opposes animal testing, unlike so many cosmetic makers.
Toothy Tabs are sold for $9.95 at Lush stores in Ala Moana Center and the International Market Place, and at lushusa.com.

4. When I was a teenager back in the 1970s, I would carry a leather bota bag while hiking or camping because it was soft and easy to carry slung over or under your shoulder. It was also fun to drink out of as the long neck made it easy to squeeze the contents into your mouth long before modern water bottles. The only drawback was that everything tasted slightly leathery.
I love that there is no bad taste in TukTek’s plastic Classic Camo Canteen with a lace-up nylon camouflage-print cover, $19.95, on Amazon.com.

5. Rainbow Drive-In in Kapahulu is famous for its hefty portions: mahi plate, teri sandwich, you name it. Only their old-fashioned lemon bars, lightly dusted with powdered sugar, look like dainty little numbers.
How looks deceive: The perfect, not-too-sweet balance of deep, fresh-lemon tang, buttery richness and crunchy shortbread crust gives full satisfaction. This lemon fiend hasn’t met its match. At $2 each, I could afford to scarf down two or three, but somehow, one’s enough.
Rainbow Drive-In is at 3308 Kanaina Ave.; call 737-0177.
