The boys’ top singles seeds in the HMSA/HHSAA State Tennis Championships easily advanced through the first two rounds, as all but one of the eight advanced on Maui.
Top-seeded Andre Ilagan of Farrington breezed through the first two rounds, not surrendering a single game. Phuc Huynh of ‘Iolani, the second seed, gave up just one game in his first two matches. Also advancing were third seed Ryo Minakata of Hawaii Prep and fourth seed Andrew Yip of Kamehameha.
The lone seeded player not to advance was fifth seed Gil Assi of Hilo, who fell to Le Jardin’s Justin Shuman in the first round 6-3, 2-6 (9). Shuman also won his second-round match against Kalani’s Koby Murata, setting up a match against Yip today. Ilagan will take on the sixth seed Jace Akagi-Okuma of Mililani, with Huynh meeting seventh seed Mackenzie Wilson of Seabury Hall, and Minakata playing Pearl City’s Kellen Higa, the eighth seed.
A similar situation played out on the girls’ side, where only eighth seed Josette Huang of Punahou lost among the seeded players. Huang was upset 6-3, 6-2 by Pearl City’s Sarah Domingo.
Top seed Katreina Corpuz of Punahou surrendered just one game in her first two matches, as did second seed Taylor Lau of St. Francis. Third seed Alyssia Fossorier of Punahou and fourth seed Tayvia Yamagata of Konawaena also advanced easily.
The biggest upset came in the girls doubles draw, where second seed Laura Okazaki and Chloe Miwa of Iolani fell in the first round to Mililani’s Erin Jyo and Reannon Suzuki 6-3, 6-4.
The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played today.
