She had her share of heartbreaks, as did all the Campbell Sabers.
When it came time to deliver in the biggest games of their season, Dani Cervantes became the heartbreaker, striking out 11 batters in a one-hit shutout as unseeded Campbell stunned top-seeded Mililani 2-0 on Saturday night in the final of the DataHouse/HHSAA Softball State Championships.
A standing-room-only crowd in excess of 1,200 at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium saw Campbell capture its third state title in a row, all under coach Michael “Shag” Hermosura. The Sabers finished 16-4, third in the OIA, only to capture another state crown.
“To see them come back, I’m really, really proud of them,” Hermosura said. “Even the third time, it’s even more gratifying and satisfying. The season was tough on them, but they played through everything. We got a great catch in right field (Nikki Corla) in the sixth inning and Dani came right back.”
For Cervantes, it seemed at times like a senior season that would come up short of another crown. Three times, she lost pitchers duels to Pearl City ace Tyanna “Peanut Butter” Kaaialii during the rugged Oahu Interscholastic Association regular season.
Mililani (14-4) came up large, winning the OIA title. Campbell’s bats, however, woke up during the state tourney, and Cervantes was at her best. She walked only one in her crowning moment against Mililani, finishing the tourney with a 4-0 record, beating Kealakehe, ILH champion Maryknoll and OIA rival Pearl City before the final.
The Sabers ignited the packed house in the bottom of the first inning when leadoff hitter Trinity Favela sent a 1-2 pitch from Misha Carreira deep over the left-field fence.
Cervantes was perfect through the first three innings, striking out six Trojans.
In the bottom of the second, Campbell loaded the bases on three walks by Carreira, but came up empty when Alesia Ranches grounded out for the third out.
In the third, Mililani got two runners into scoring position. Tarah Aniya led off with a walk and Maya Yoshiura reached base on a fielder’s choice, with Aniya beating the throw to second by Campbell shortstop Caisha Nunes. However, Merilis Rivera popped out, and after Markie Okamoto’s sacrifice bunt moved the runners over, Shannon Pascua-Stanton lined out to first, ending the inning.
Both teams had opportunities in the fourth. Mililani got Aniya (walk) on base, and when she beat the fielder’s choice throw from Nunes to second base, the Trojans had two baserunners. After Rivera popped out and a sacrifice bunt by Okamoto, the runners were in scoring position. However, Shannon Pascua-Stanton’s missile line drive was caught by first baseman Zoie Recolan for the third out.
Campbell put runners at the corners in the bottom of the fourth after two walks issued by Carreira, but Ranches struck out to end the inning.
After stranding a runner at third base in the fifth, Campbell tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Favela led off with a single, Alo walked, and Ranches again delivered a clutch single for the second time in as many nights, scoring Favela for a 2-0 Campbell lead.
The Sabers stranded two more runners and finished with 12 left on base for the game, but the cushion was more than enough for Cervantes, who delivered her best performances in the biggest games of the Sabers’ season.
