Vog, possibly heavy rain expected today

Vog and the potential for heavy rainfall will stick around today as a cold front northwest of the state draws moist, southerly winds across the islands, a National Weather Service forecaster said.

During the day, however, the winds will shift to more easterly winds, which should help reduce the vog. But the potential for heavy rainfall will remain into the afternoon — mostly for Oahu and Kauai — as the sun heats up the islands, said forecaster Norman Liu.

On Monday, southerly winds brought vog from Hawaii island to the smaller islands and heavy rain to the interior parts of Oahu. At about 3:15 p.m., radar showed rain falling at a rate of one to two inches an hour over Waipahu and Ewa, the Weather Service said. A flood advisory for Oahu was issued for about three hours because of the rain. The advisory expired at 6:15 p.m.

Regular tradewinds are expected to return Wednesday.
