Strong quake hits off Vanuatu; no tsunami threat to Hawaii
A strong, deep earthquake hit off Vanuatu early today but does not pose a tsunami threat to Hawaii.
The preliminary magnitude 6.8 quake struck 36.6 miles north-northeast of Port-Orly, Vanuatu at 3:52 a.m. at a depth of 105 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
“Based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement.
