The 25th annual National Association of Letter Carriers’ Food Drive is underway today. So, pack a bag of nonperishable food items and place it next to your mailbox before your mail carrier passes by.
Last year, Hawaii’s 1,000 mail carriers collected more than 524,000 pounds of items — that’s a haul of 524 pounds per carrier. Billed as the nation’s largest one-day effort to tackle hunger, the drive supports community food banks such as the Hawaii Foodbank.
Food donation bags promoting the event have been delivered to mailboxes statewide. Most-wanted donations? Canned anything: meats, tuna, meals such as chili, stew, spaghetti or soups, fruits and vegetables.
