Authorities removed a mangled vehicle Tuesday after a fatal crash that killed two men off Kunia Road. The vehicle crashed into the tree in the foreground.

Honolulu police are investigating a single-car crash that killed two men early Tuesday off Kunia Road.

Their names have yet to be released by the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office.

At about 9 a.m. police responded to a report of a vehicle found in the brush area, said Lt. Andre Peters of the Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division.

When police arrived they found two men dead a few feet away from the vehicle.

City Emergency Medical Services said one victim was 32 and the other was in his 30s, and that they both were dead when paramedics arrived.

In an emailed statement, Dan Clegg, Hawaii business operations lead of Monsanto Hawaii, said an employee discovered a mangled vehicle at the company’s Kunia farm Tuesday morning.

Peters said a dark Honda sedan was traveling south on Kunia Road at “a high rate of speed” when the driver lost control. The vehicle struck a metal guardrail and then a tree before it overturned into the brush.

Because no motorists reported the accident, police figured it happened sometime when traffic on Kunia Road is scarce, possibly between 3 and 4 a.m.

Peters said the two men were ejected from the vehicle.

The crash scene was roughly a half-mile south of the Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation building at Kunia Camp.

Broken car parts were strewn along the narrow shoulder of Kunia Road. Just behind the guardrail, not far from the mangled vehicle, a tree stood with its top half freshly sheared off.

It’s unknown whether seat belts were used at the time of the crash.

HPD’s Specialized Services Division assisted in the investigation after a child’s car seat was found inside the vehicle, raising the possibility that a child also was thrown from the car.

“SSD did a thorough check of the area and found there were no additional occupants,” Peters said.
