Police are investigating a case involving a 4-year-old girl who suffered burns and injuries at a home in Maili.
The assault occurred at a Hila Street residence sometime between 4 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. Thursday, police said. A source said the girl suffered burns from a cigarette and a lighter.
Paramedics responded at about 7:25 a.m. and treated the victim for first- and second-degree burns to her lip, arm and hands and an abrasion to her neck.
Emergency Medical Services transported her in serious condition to Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, said EMS spokeswoman Shayne Enright.
Police said the victim was later released from the hospital after she was treated for her injuries.
Hawaii island man faces multiple charges
A Big Island man was charged Friday after he sped away from police in a stolen truck.
Lucas Rivera also was charged with multiple counts of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, resisting an order to stop a motor vehicle, robbery, computer fraud, fraudulent use of a credit card, theft, criminal property damage and drug offenses. His total bail is set at $451,000.
At 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning, police received reports in the Puna district of a white pickup truck speeding and overtaking vehicles as it traveled toward Volcano from Kurtistown on Highway 11. Officers spotted the truck and identified the driver as Rivera, but in the interest of public safety did not pursue the suspect, police said.
At 12:45 p.m. officers in Kau responded to similar calls of a white truck driving recklessly and found an abandoned white Nissan pickup near Punaluu Beach Park. The truck had been reported stolen Wednesday evening from Leilani Estates in Puna.
After an extensive manhunt by air and ground, Rivera was captured without incident at 8:50 p.m. Thursday at Punaluu Beach Park. He was transported to the Hilo cellblock.
