A 31-year-old man died Tuesday from injuries sustained in an accident while driving a motorcycle.
Honolulu police said the man was traveling north on Leokane Street and collided with a vehicle traveling east on Leonui Street in Waipahu.
The incident took place at about 10 a.m. Tuesday, and the man was initially listed in critical condition when transported to a hospital.
Police said speed appears to be a contributing factor in the accident.
Phone, internet scams try to extort money
CrimeStoppers and the Honolulu Police Department are warning the public about two scams circulating by telephone and internet.
In the telephone scheme, a male caller says that a family member has been kidnapped and that the family needs to wire money to an address in Mexico. All money transfers are requested through Western Union. The calls are made from a private number, and the caller speaks with an accent.
Authorities are warning the public not to send money and to call the police. If the call comes from a private number, let it go to voicemail.
The social media scam involves a woman requesting to friend you.
Once the friend request is accepted, the woman attempts to entice the person to commit a lewd act. If the act is performed, the woman says that the act has been recorded and if payment is not received, the recording will be released on social media. Police urge social media users not to friend anyone whom the user has not met in person.
Anyone with information about either scam is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300 or *CRIME on a cellphone. The public can go to honolulucrimestoppers.org to send anonymous tips.
