A 47-year-old electrician was taken to a hospital in critical condition early Wednesday after being struck at a work site by a vehicle driven by an allegedly impaired 22-year-old man, police said.
At about 12:40 a.m., police said, the driver was traveling westbound on the Pali Highway onramp when he lost control of his vehicle and struck the rear of an unoccupied utility van parked in a construction work zone. The vehicle then struck a guardrail and the electrician who was behind an aerial boom truck.
Police said the electrician, from Ewa Beach, was pinned between the boom truck and the vehicle, about 50 feet east of the Queen Emma Street overpass. Tim Sakahara, spokesman of the state Department of Transportation, said the injured man was a contractor working on a lighting improvement project.
Paramedics treated the electrician and transported him to a hospital in critical condition.
Police said alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash. It’s unknown whether excessive speed was involved. Officers arrested the driver, who was uninjured, on suspicion of first-degree negligent injury and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.
“It is tragic that he was injured due to the alleged illegal behaviors of the driver involved,” Sakahara said in an email. “As we continue to hope for his recovery, HDOT reminds drivers to obey the rules and law on the road.”
