Family expands Dad’s dream
Good coffees come from all over the globe, but it’s nice when an exceptionally good one is produced in our neck of the woods. Rusty’s Hawaiian is just that.
Hailing from Kau, that other region of Hawaii island known for top-quality java, Rusty’s is the result of a family’s commitment to making the dream of Rusty Obra come true.
The late Obra moved to Kau to create artisanal coffee, and his wife and daughter carry on that mission, farming, milling and roasting award-winning coffees.
Until recently Rusty’s 100 percent Ka‘u Coffee Classic Roasts were difficult to find outside the Big Island but whole beans and ground coffee are now showing up in Oahu markets. Find 7-ounce bags in medium and dark roasts for about $22 at Foodland Farms, Whole Foods and Down to Earth stores (except Aiea).
It’s an indulgence, to be sure, but one worth partaking in every now and again.

‘Food Porn’ showcases Waikiki chef
David Lukela, chef at Beachhouse at the Moana, will be featured Sunday on the FYI network show “Food Porn.”
New York restaurateur Michael Chernow hosts the televised tour of beautiful food, now in its second season. Chernow’s goal is to track down those who create dishes that generate the frothiest social media buzz — often under the hashtag “food porn.” Lukela’s episode, “Aloha Eats,” was filmed a year ago. It airs on Hawaiian Telcom Channel 300 at 4 p.m. Sunday, repeating at 8 p.m. and on Oceanic/Spectrum Channel 548 at 7 and 11 p.m.
