The city’s aquatic center in Waipio is scheduled to be renamed for the late U.S. Rep. K. Mark Takai at a ceremony Saturday morning.
The public is invited to join the Takai family, Mayor Kirk Caldwell, City Council members, representatives from Hawaii’s congressional delegation and the Legislature for the dedication of the K. Mark Takai Veterans Memorial Aquatics Center, which will take place at the entrance to the swimming facility at Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Takai, a swimmer at both the University of Hawaii and Pearl City High School, would have turned 50 Saturday. He died last year after a bout with pancreatic cancer.
The Council adopted Resolution 16-301, approving the renaming, in December.
The ceremony coincides with the 69th annual Keo Nakama Swim and Dive Invitational meet.

Kona murder hearing set
Two brothers charged in the 2015 murder of a 71-year-old man in Kona appeared Thursday in Kona Circuit Court, when Judge Margaret Masunaga confirmed their bail at $500,000 each and set their preliminary hearing for Monday.
Eber Miranda-Garcia, 27, and Marlon Miranda-Garcia, 24, both of Holualoa, were charged Wednesday with second-degree murder and second-degree conspiracy to commit murder in the death of Dolores Borja Valle, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
A third brother arrested Tuesday was released pending further investigation. But police said he has been detained by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Police said a fourth suspect, a 32-year-old woman also of Holualoa, was released pending further investigation.
On Aug. 9, 2015, Valle’s body was found in a coffee field in Captain Cook. Autopsy results determined he died of sharp and blunt force trauma to the head.
N. Kona water crisis worsens
Water customers in Hawaii island’s North Kona district are under emergency water restrictions after a pump failure at the Keahuolu Well.
The county’s Department of Water Supply said Thursday customers are being asked to restrict water use to health and safety needs of drinking, cooking and sanitation.
Department officials did not say how many customers are affected, but said those in the area from Keauhou to Keahole and Honalo to Makalei must stop using water for irrigation and washing of vehicles and boats.
The department opened potable water distribution stations at Ane Keohokalole Highway, between Kealakehe Parkway and Kealakehe High School, and at Hina Lani, between Anini and Manu Mele streets.
