Oahu’s Travis Browne suffered his fourth consecutive loss in the UFC when he tapped out to a choke hold in the second round against Aleksei Oleinik in the final preliminary bout of UFC 213 on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Browne (18-7-1, 9-7-1) was a 3-to-1 favorite against Oleinik (52-10-1, 4-1) and scored the first knockdown of the fight midway through the first round.
Oleinik withstood the initial onslaught and eventually scored a knockdown of his own and nearly submitted Browne from his back when the first round ended.
Browne secured a takedown early in the second round but didn’t land a single punch while on top. Oleinik eventually worked his way up and then took Browne down.
It wasn’t long before Oleinik took Browne’s back and secured a rear-naked choke, forcing Browne to submit at 3 minutes, 44 seconds.
“That was really difficult,” Oleinik said in a post-fight interview.
The 40-year-old Russian fighter earned his 40th professional victory via submission after Browne initiated the first takedown of the second round.
“I was hoping he would do that but didn’t believe it would happen,” added Oleinik, who is ranked No. 14 in the UFC at heavyweight.
Browne, who is ranked No. 9, hasn’t won since a third-round TKO of Matt Mitrione in January 2016 and is 2-6 in his last eight fights. He started his career with 14 consecutive fights without a loss.
