Body of visitor found near bottom of Kilauea caldera
Park rangers recovered the body of a 38-year-old visitor near the bottom of the Kilauea caldera at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
At about 7 p.m. Saturday, two visitors found a backpack on the Crater Rim Trail and notified dispatchers. Rangers searched the caldera rim and floor for the man to no avail and suspended the search due to unsafe conditions, said spokeswoman Jessica Ferracane in a news release.
The search resumed at dawn Sunday when rangers aboard a helicopter spotted the body of the man about 250 feet below the caldera rim at about 5:35 a.m.
Ferracane said the body was located in an area that is not erupting.
