Man arrested after assault of officer in Waikiki

Police arrested a 22-year-old man after he allegedly assaulted a police officer in Waikiki.

At about 9:10 p.m. Saturday, police said the suspect was observed with illegal drugs in his possession. An officer responded and the suspect assaulted him. Police said the 22-year-old man then attempted to take the officer’s handgun from his holster.

Additional officers arrived and arrested the suspect at the intersection of Kalakaua and Kapahulu avenues. The 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault of a law enforcement officer in the first degree, promotion of a dangerous drug in the third degree, resisting arrest and attempted theft in the first degree.
