The name of the 38-year-old man who was found dead in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park has been released.
The National Park Service identified the man found on the Kilauea Volcano caldera floor as Gregory Michael Ure, also known as Leo Michael Adonis. Ure’s last known address was La Mesa, Calif.
A Park Service news release also said a note was found in Ure’s backpack. The release said officials won’t discuss details of the note or Ure’s death until after an investigation is complete.
Two hikers found a backpack on the trail Saturday. Rangers began looking for the owner Saturday night, but the search was suspended because of dangerous conditions.
The body was found Sunday about 250 feet below the caldera rim by rangers searching by helicopter.
Partially blind, ‘bike man’ rides to top of Mauna Kea
KAILUA-KONA >> A partially blind Hawaii resident known around Kailua-Kona as “Bike Man” has reached the summit of Mauna Kea on his bicycle.
Brian Fulghum made it to the top of the mountain over the weekend, West Hawaii Today reported.
Fulghum is known to wear a costume and cape while riding his bike around town. Tackling the 13,796-foot mountain was tough, he said, but was part of his effort to get “the most out of life with a physical challenge.”
“The day-in, day-out, that’s harder than this,” he said.
The 80-mile, upward ride went through sand and gravel. Fulghum started before the sun came up Saturday and finished Sunday afternoon.
“I had a blast,” Fulghum said.
Steve Opp drove Fulghum’s support vehicle during the ride. Opp said there were no moments of panic or trouble.
