Vaping among teens turns up asthma risk

While health effects tied to electronic cigarettes are still murky, a University of Hawaii survey has turned up a possible asthma concern. A statewide sample of more than 6,000 high school students found that teens who used e-cigarettes, which dispense flavored vapor that often includes nicotine, were more likely to report having the chronic disease.

On the bright side, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention annual report on youth and tobacco, released last month, found that nationwide 11.3 percent of high school students used e-cigarettes in 2016, compared with 16 percent the year before, marking the first drop since the CDC started keeping track of e-cigarettes in 2011. Here’s hoping the vaping fad will quickly fade away.

A younger Don Ho returns to Waikiki

The late Don Ho was an icon of Waikiki entertainment for most of his career, so it’s not surprising the community wanted a vivid memory in the famous singer.

A bronze statue, to be unveiled Aug. 13 at the International Market Place, was inspired by a film frame of him singing to children on the beach, a scene from a 1972 TV episode of “The Brady Bunch,” artist Kim Duffett said.

Many veterans of his Waikiki show during the later years have a different memory: the crooner seated at the keyboards. Nonetheless, the image of the younger Ho will be the immortalized one, seen by thousands.
