Windsurfer dies at Kanaha Beach Park

Leila Fujimori

A 75-year-old windsurfer died Tuesday at Kanaha Beach Park in Kahului, despite efforts by a kite boarder to tow him in.

The 75-year-old man from California lived part-time in Kihei, the Maui Fire Department said in a news release.

A kiteboarder spotted the man in distress and tried to tow the man to shore. They were about 500 yards from the beach when Ocean Safety lifeguards spotted them just before 2 p.m.

Lifeguards used a rescue watercraft to bring the windsurfer to shore, but the man suddenly fell unconscious.

Lifeguards performed CPR after they got the man to shore. Paramedics and a fire crew arrived on scene and performed life-saving efforts, but could not resuscitate the man, who died at the scene.
