Hawaii’s Cody Young and Brisa Hennessey won their respective divisions at the World Surf League Vans U.S. Open of Surfing Pro Junior at Huntington Beach, Calif., on Saturday.
The 17-year-old Hennessy scored an 8.67 on her first wave to finish with 15.00 against Caroline Marks and Meah Collins of the the U.S., and Portugal’s Teresa Bonvalot, the top-ranked surfer on the European junior pro tour, in the women’s junior final.
In the men’s junior final, Young opened with an 8.33 and added a 7.13 to hold off Australia’s Reef Heazlewood, 15.46-14.93. Young had won his semifinal with a 14.20 where Hawaii’s Elijah Fox was third at 11.10.
“To win this event in my last year as a Pro Junior is the best thing ever,” the 18-year-old Young said. “This is my first major win of my career so far — I’m just so stoked on this right now.
“For Brisa to win this event as well is super special and we’re bringing back two wins to Hawaii. We’re excited to have that opportunity and showcase what we can do.”
Also on Saturday, Hawaii’s Dusty Payne was eliminated in Round 5 of the Men’s QS 10.000, leaving no Hawaii surfers in the division.
It is an all-Hawaii semifinal today on the women’s side with Tatiana Weston-Webb taking on Coco Ho. The other is between Sage Erickson and Courtney Conlogue. Live coverage is available online at VansUSOpenofSurfing.com or WorldSurfLeague.com.
KRU opens with win
The Pearl City KRU opened pool play at the 2017 Cal Ripken 10u World Series in Hammond, Ind., with a 2-1 win over the team from West Raleigh, N.C., on Saturday.
Noah Bernal led KRU, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. The KRU will next take on Crown Point, Ind., on Monday.

Despite the loss, Mililani KC was able to claim the top seed in their pool. Earning the top seed means the team will have the day off today and a double bye into the quarterfinals, which will be played on Monday.
Local sailors medal at Worlds
Sailors from Hawaii between the ages of 12 and 14 earned medals in four categories at the Open Bic World Youth Sailing Championships this week in Lake Garda, Italy.
Kanoa Pick, 14, placed eighth and Gavin Ball, 14, placed ninth in the U17 Gold fleet. Kamana’o Morton, 12, finished third in the U17 Silver fleet. JP Lattanzi, 12, placed fifth in the U13 fleet.
All of the sailors are from the Hawaii Kai Boat Club in Honolulu. They competed against nearly 200 sailors from around the world.
Dodson to speak at Honolulu QB Club
Kirk Dodson, the commissioner of the Aloha Youth Lacrosse Association, will be the featured speaker at Monday’s Honolulu Quarterback Club meeting at Maple Garden Restaurant.
Dodson, who is originally from Pasadena, Calif., began playing lacrosse when he was 11. After moving to Hawaii, he played for the Hawaii Masters Lacrosse team. In the summer of 2014, he became the commissioner of AYLA, and has helped increase AYLA’s registration over 97 percent in three seasons. He was also instrumental in coordinating with the Hawaii Chapter of U.S. Lacrosse to compete against high school teams from the Big Island for the Founder’s Cup.
The luncheon, which is $16, starts at 11:30 a.m. and the program at noon. The public is invited.
