The University of Hawaii women’s basketball team will face five teams coming off NCAA tournament appearances in a 29-game 2017-18 schedule announced on Wednesday.
The Rainbow Wahine make their public debut with the Green and White scrimmage on Oct. 27 and face UH Hilo in an exhibition game on Nov. 1.
They open the season with a road trip to the Pacific Northwest and face Portland on Nov. 10 and Seattle two days later.
UH will host two early-season tournaments. The Bank of Hawaii Classic (Nov. 17-19) includes matchups with Northern Arizona and San Diego. The Rainbow Wahine Showdown (Nov. 24-26) features Marist, Purdue and USC. Purdue advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament last season.
The nonconference schedule also includes a home game against defending Big Sky champion Montana State (Dec. 4), a visit to Arizona (Dec. 17) and a trip to Las Vegas to face Texas A&M and Oregon in the Duel in the Desert (Dec. 20, 22). Texas A&M reached the NCAA second round and Oregon advanced to the elite eight.
UH opens Big West play Jan. 4 at Cal State Fullerton and closes the regular season March 3 at home against Cal Poly. UC Davis (Jan. 6 away, Feb. 17 home) is the defending Big West regular-season champion and Long Beach State (Jan. 13 home, Feb. 24 away) won the league tournament to represent the conference in the NCAA tournament.
Oda advances at U.S. Amatuer
UNLV senior and Moanalua alum John Oda advanced to the round of the 32 of the U.S. Amateur at the Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles.
Oda topped Justin Tereshko, a Greensboro, N.C., native, 2 up in their matchup. He will face Dylan Wu of Medford, Ore., today.
Thunder advance to Babe Ruth title game
The Thunder Baseball team advanced to the championship game of the Babe Ruth U14 World Series with a 5-1 semifinal win over Hamilton, N.J., in Glen Allen, Va., on Wednesday.
Kelena Sauer allowed one run and four hits in six innings with eight strikeouts. Jayton Pang pitched the final inning, notching the save with two strikeouts. Sauer, Tate Shimao and Kody Watanabe each had two hits to lead the Thunder.
Thunder Baseball (5-0) will take on West Linn, Ore., today at noon in the championship game.
