Punahou alum Trevor Crabb and teammate Sean Rosenthal outlasted Crabb’s brother Taylor and Jake Gibb 16-21, 21-15, 15-11 to remain alive at the AVP Manhattan Beach Open on Saturday in Manhattan Beach, Calif. Rosenthal and Trevor Crabb, who is fifth in hitting percentage in the tournament, went 3-0 in Friday’s main draw bracket.
Taylor Crabb and Gibb tied for fifth in the 130-team field, while Punahou alums and brothers Riley and Maddison McKibbin tied for ninth place. Trevor Crabb and Rosenthal will face Reid Priddy and Ricardo Santos in today’s semifinal at 6:45 a.m.
On the women’s side, former University of Hawaii All-America beach volleyball player Katie Spieler finished ninth out of 90 teams with partner Karissa Cook.
The men’s and women’s finals will be broadcast on KHNL today at 8:30 a.m.
Hanneman places third in Indonesia
Maui’s Eli Hanneman placed third at the Hello Pacitan Pro in Indonesia on Saturday. The World Surf League Qualifying Series 1,000-rated event was held in 3- to 6-foot waves at Watu Karung in East Java.
Hanneman needed two scores to edge 15-year-old Kian Martin in the semifinal. However, the 14-year-old suffered a major wipeout, which resulted in minor facial injuries. He was forced to leave the water halfway through the heat.
Martin was bested by Indonesia’s Rio Waida in the final.
