A 22-year-old man who police said crashed into two police cars and broke into the home of two elderly people while trying to run from officers has been charged.
The man’s 26-year-old
girlfriend also faces a charge of hindering prosecution.
Traven Akana was charged Friday with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, two counts
of first-degree criminal
property damage and first-degree unauthorized entry in a dwelling. His bail was set at $50,000.
His girlfriend, Michele Yoshimoto, was charged in connection with the incidents. Her bail was not
available.
On Aug. 22, police saw Akana driving a stolen truck in Kaneohe and tried to initiate a traffic stop, but Akana got away after crashing into two police vehicles, police said.
Then on Aug. 30, police located Akana in Salt Lake, but he ran away and broke into a Laakea Street home in an attempt to evade police.
A man and a woman, both 82, were in the home at the time, police said.
On Saturday, the man told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that Akana was trying to avoid the police and that there was no danger because there were a lot of
police up and down the street. He declined further comment.
Police said Akana was
arrested inside the home at about 5:35 p.m. Thursday.
Yoshimoto was with Akana on both occasions, police said. She was also
arrested Thursday on Laakea Street.
