The Hawaii Pacific women’s volleyball team swept Cal State Los Angeles 25-18, 25-16, 25-23, but dropped a five-set thriller to Simon Fraser, 18-25, 25-11, 28-30, 25-23, 15-12, on Day 2 of the D2 West Region Showcase on Friday in Nampa, Idaho.
Sophomore Perla Escobar led the Sharks (3-4) with 19 kills and hit .586 in the victory, and added 15 kills in the loss to the Canadian squad. HPU freshman Cameryn Collie posted a double-double with 15 kills and a team-high 22 digs, while sophomore libero Amanda Acosta picked up a total of 34 digs in the two matches.

>> Chaminade improved to 5-2 after wins over Western Oregon (18-25, 25-18, 27-25, 26-24) and Cal State San Marcos (16-25, 25-16, 25-13, 25-19) in Monmouth, Ore.
Sophomore Emma Tecklenburg finished with double-doubles in both matches with 15 kills and 10 digs against WOU, followed by 15 kills and 16 digs against CSUSM. Freshman Claire Zanon led the Silverswords with 31 digs in the doubleheader.
>> Junior Randi Hunter put down a team-high 14 kills with just one error as Hawaii Hilo (3-2) swept host San Francisco State 25-16, 25-20, 27-25 in San Francisco. Junior defensive specialist Mina Grant recorded 14 digs against the Gators (3-3).
Hawaii Hilo women’s soccer stuns Cavs
Jamie Salas and Bryana-Marie Ebbers scored two goals each to lead the Hawaii Hilo women’s soccer team in a 4-1 rout of Concordia (Ore.) on Friday at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Vulcans improve to 3-0, the first time in the history of the program that they have begun a season with three consecutive victories.
Gabrielle Ewing scored the lone goal for the Cavaliers (2-2) after trailing 2-0 at halftime.
>> Hawaii Pacific scored three goals in the second half to defeat Western Oregon 3-1 on Friday at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Sara Romo tied the game in the 68th minute and Leonicia Lopez found the net twice within three minutes to secure the win for the Sharks (3-1). Kaili Brundage scored in the 11th minute for the Wolves (0-3).
Federici joining UH track & field
Mandy Federici was named an assistant coach for the University of Hawaii track & field squad by first-year head coach Tim Boyce on Friday. Federici previously served as an assistant coach at Pacific University (Ore.), where she oversaw throws. Under her watch, six throwers earned all-region honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Federici also worked at Concordia University in both St. Paul, Minn., and Portland, Ore. She also spent one year as head field coach at Mount Hood Community College (Ore.).
