The Department of Education is making inroads against its shortage of school bus drivers on Kauai and Maui.
Contractors have not had enough drivers with commercial licenses.
On Maui, two Iao Intermediate bus routes were restored last week, serving the Waihee, Waiehu Kou I-IV, Ocean View Estates, Waiehu Heights, Waiehu Terrace, Paukukalo and Iao Parkside areas, the department reported Friday.
Maui’s shortage of qualified school bus drivers is currently at seven, down from 11 three weeks ago. Routes at Lahaina–luna High have been fully restored.
The suspended routes at Baldwin High and Iao Intermediate are expected to be restored in a few weeks.
Kauai’s shortage of qualified school bus drivers is also at seven, down from eight three weeks ago. School bus routes have been consolidated to adjust to the staffing shortages and all schools are still being serviced.
Several candidates are in the licensing process and routes will be restored when they enter service, the department said.
