Hawaii’s Sebastian Zietz and John John Florence won their first-round heats at the Hurley Pro on Monday in San Clemente, Calif.
Zietz had a two-wave total of 16.83 to top Australia’s Connor O’Leary (9.26) and California’s Kanoa Igarashi (7.90).
Florence posted a 16.07 to best Brazil’s Italo Ferreira (15.90) and Japan’s Hiroto Ohhara (12.40).
Both local surfers advanced directly to the third round.
Hawaii’s Ezekiel Lau advanced to the second round by placing second in his heat with a 13.43.
In the women’s Swatch Pro also at San Clemente, Hawaii’s Carissa Moore (13.87) and Tatiana Weston-Webb (10.50) finished second in their first-round heats Monday.
Fellow local surfers Coco Ho (11.27) and Malia Manuel (6.47) placed third in their heats.
All four will surf in the second round.
UH’s Mata named Big West’s top defender
Hawaii goalie Alexis Mata was named Big West Conference women’s soccer defensive player of the week, the league announced Monday.
Mata, a junior from Woodland, Calif., made eight saves in a 2-0 victory at Idaho State on Tuesday. It was her first career shutout.
Mata’s 32 saves this season are tied for second in the Big West and tied for 35th nationally.
Hawaii Hilo’s Salas honored by PacWest
Hawaii Hilo forward Jaimie Salas was named Pacific West Conference women’s soccer player of the week, the league announced Monday.
Salas, a junior from Chandler, Ariz., scored twice in a 4-1 victory over Concordia (Ore.) on Friday and netted another goal in a 3-1 win over Chaminade on Sept. 4.
Schremmer wins first-round match
Honolulu’s Patricia Schremmer won in the first round of match play at the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur on Monday in Portland, Ore.
Schremmer defeated Susan Rheney of Greensboro, Ga., 5 and 4, at Waverley Country Club.
Schremmer will face Corey Weworski of Carlsbad, Calif., today in the round of 32.
Team from Japan leads Billfish event
Japan’s Core Marlin Club led after the first day of the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament on Monday off Kailua- Kona.
The crew tagged and released 160- and 120-pound Pacific blue marlins. The catches netted the team 600 points.
South Africa’s Deep Sea Angling Association Team is second with 550 points.
