Hawaii’s John John Florence advanced to the quarterfinals of the Hurley Pro after advancing through two heats Thursday at Lower Trestles in San Clemente, Calif.
In the fourth round, Florence posted a two-wave total of 15.23 to finish second behind France’s Jeremy Flores, who scored a 15.94. Kanoa Igarashi of California placed third with an 11.33.
Florence beat Australia’s Bede Durbidge 18.40 to 14.54 in the fifth round.
Florence will face Flores in the quarterfinals.
In the women’s Swatch Pro, also at Lower Trestles, Hawaii’s Carissa Moore was eliminated by California’s Lakey Peterson 19.57 to 18.00 in the quarterfinals.
Surfside Marina-Team Miss Behavin in lead
Surfside Marina-Team Miss Behavin reeled in a 140-pound Pacific blue marlin to take the top spot in the standings Thursday at the 58th annual Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament off Kailua, Kona.
Surfside Marina-Team Miss Behavin has 1,000 points and is followed by Japan’s Core Marlin Club and Old South Marlin Club-International with 900.
Through four of five days of competition, 32 billfish have been tagged and released.
Chaminade sweeps Holy Names
Emma Tecklenburg had 10 kills and Claire Zanon added eight as the Chaminade volleyball team beat Holy Names 25-16, 25-22, 25-15 on Thursday at McCabe Gym.
The Silverswords improved to 6-3, 1-0 PacWest.
Christina Cobarruvias recorded 22 assists for the Hawks (0-10, 0-1).
