No tsunami threat from large quake off Vanuatu
A large earthquake off Vanuatu in the South Pacific did not generate a Pacific-wide tsunami that would threaten Hawaii, officials said today.
The quake, with a magnitude of 6.4, was centered about 53 miles north-northwest of Isangel, Vanuatu, at a depth of about 124 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake struck at about 10:09 a.m. Hawaii time.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center on Oahu said “a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.”
