Bellator’s most dominant 125-pound female fighter is finally getting a belt to compete for.
Punahou graduate Ilima-Lei Macfarlane will fight in the inaugural female flyweight world title bout against Emily Ducote at Bellator 186 on Nov. 3 at the Bryce Jordan Center in State College, Pa., the organization announced Tuesday.
The 27-year-old Macfarlane, who is 5-0 in Bellator with three submission victories, has brought the division to prominence enough for CEO Scott Coker to create a world title in the division.
Bellator will be the first promotion based in the United States to have a female world champion at 125 pounds. The UFC only crowns female champs at 115, 135 and 145 pounds.
“Not only do I have a chance to make history for women’s MMA, but I have a chance to make history for MMA as a sport in general by becoming the first 125-pound world champion,” Macfarlane said. “It’s an incredible opportunity.”
Macfarlane improved to 6-0 in her professional career with a dominant first-round submission victory over Jessica Middleton in April.
After that win, Macfarlane was fairly confident she would be fighting for a title next.
“I knew that Scott wanted to crown a champion by the end of this year, so pretty much after my last fight I thought, ‘If it’s not me, then who the (expletive)?,’ ” Macfarlane said. “After my performance my last fight I had better fight for the belt.”
Macfarlane will face a familiar opponent in Ducote (6-2), who is one of only two fighters to take Macfarlane to a decision.
Macfarlane pulled out a unanimous decision over Ducote in December 2016. Since then, Ducote has beaten both Middleton and Katy Collins to improve to 4-1 in Bellator.
“She proved she deserved (the shot),” Macfarlane said. “I think it’s going to be another barn burner. She’ll probably be coming back at me hungrier because not only does she have a chance to avenge a loss, she has a chance to get that belt, so I’m totally not underestimating her at all.”
Macfarlane can become the second female world champion in MMA from Hawaii, joining 21-year-old Angela Lee, a Mililani graduate, who is the ONE Championship 115-pound champion. Lee fights Mei Yamaguchi in Singapore on Nov. 24.
The two local fighters met prior to Lee’s last fight in May in Singapore when Macfarlane was there to compete in a jiu-jitsu tournament.
“It was the first time I met her in person and I wanted to show my support,” Macfarlane said. “With all of us girls from Hawaii, we might not have met each other in person, but we all support each other on social media because we know we’re representing Hawaii and we’ve got to hold it down for Hawaii.”
The Bellator title fight will be shown tape delayed in Hawaii on Spike.
