Three grey reef shark pups born earlier this month at the Maui Ocean Center are now on exhibit in the Nursery Bay.

The pups — two females and one male — were born in the Open Ocean exhibit and recently cleared from their quarantine period. They were given a traditional Hawaiian blessing, and will eventually be released to the ocean. The mother grey reef shark, also in the Open Ocean exhibit, is in good health, according to the center.

Grey reef sharks typically copulate every other year, giving birth to an average of one to six pups. The grey reef shark (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos) is one of five reef shark species currently listed as near-threatened on the IUCN Red List.
