Both the director and deputy director of the Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation have abruptly left their jobs.
The resignations of Director Charmaine Kamaka and Deputy Director Ryan Chong were effective as of Friday, the county said by email Monday. There was no explanation for the sudden departures.
“We are very grateful for all that Charmaine and Ryan have done for the community,” Mayor Harry Kim said. “They took on a very difficult task and did good work.”
Roxcie Waltjen, the department’s culture education administrator, has been asked to fill in as interim director, Kim said.

Repairs to shut 3 nature reserves
Repair work will close three nature reserves on Maui for two weeks beginning Monday, the state Division of Forestry and Wildlife announced. The work affects the Kula Forest Reserve, Waipoli Access Road, the Papaanui Tract of the Kahikinui Forest Reserve, and Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area.
The closure, through Oct. 13, is to allow for scheduled repairs to roads and trails, road safety improvements and fire prevention efforts.
Any forest or park permits for Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area for that period are being canceled. All roads, hunting areas, trails and facilities and activities associated with these areas will be affected by the closures.
Waipoli Access Road will be closed from the “white gate” to the Skyline Trailhead gate.
