Police reopened Kaukonahua Road this afternoon after firefighters contained a brush fire near Waialua.

The road was reopened about 5:15 p.m.

The initial call came in at 1:42 p.m. and was for a vehicle fire that spread to brush, said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. David Jenkins.

Firefighters were trying to contain the fire about 2:10 p.m. and requested additional engines and a tanker to assist at the scene. A fire helicopter was also dispatched to the scene.

About 2:40 p.m., Jenkins said 30 firefighters had responded with six engines, two tankers and a helicopter.

Police closed Kaukonahua between Kamananui Road and Thompson Corner while firefighters worked at the scene.
