Farrington protected its home turf one more time to earn a trip to the west side.
Governors quarterback Stephen Eter threw four touchdown passes and ran for a score and Farrington pulled away from Radford in a 36-14 win on Saturday in the first round of the OIA Division I playoffs at Skippa Diaz Stadium.
The Governors and Rams went into halftime tied 6-6 and Farrington scored on three of its first four possessions after the break to advance to a quarterfinal matchup at No. 6 Waianae on Friday.
“I just told the kids, ‘I don’t know about you guys, but I’m thinking about Waianae right now,’” Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said.
Governors running back Samsen Tanuvasa helped Farrington establish control with 109 yards on 28 carries and the ground production opened up the passing lanes for Eter, who completed 15 of 22 passes for 174 yards. Two of his scoring throws went to Chris Afe-Alaivanu, who also shared time at quarterback this season.
“As a senior it’s a do-or-die for us,” said Eter, who also ran for 46 yards. “So I had to step up and tell them we’re not trying to hang up our pads yet.”
Radford’s lone win of the regular season was a Kaiser forfeit and gave up at least 33 points in five losses while finishing sixth in the OIA Blue.
But coming off a 21-20 loss to Moanalua to close the regular season, the Rams (1-8, 1-7) proved stubborn in the first half to go into the break tied.
“The whole season the kids fight every game,” Radford coach Lon Passos said. “That’s what I told them, finish the game, believe and they fought to the end.”
Farrington opened the second half with eight consecutive runs for 55 yards before facing fourth-and-goal from the 3. Eter rolled right and found Reginald Faamatau at the goal line. Faamatau made the catch and was forced back, but the official ruled he broke the plane for the go-ahead score. Eter then completed a pass to Blessing Umaga for a 2-point conversion to give Farrington a 14-6 lead.
“Just told them, focus,” Okimoto said of the halftime message. “The key word was focus.”
TitanAlii Pesamino blocked a punt to give Farrington possession at the Radford 31 and Eter connected with Afe-Alaivanu on the next play for the second TD connection.
Eter added a 20-yard touchdown pass to Chad Silva on the first play of the fourth quarter to push the lead to 29-6. After Radford’s Aldrich Pascual returned a fumble 50 yards for a touchdown, Eter answered with a 20-yard touchdown run.
The Governors defense stifled Radford after halftime and held the Rams to 102 total yards and pushed them back for minus-6 yards rushing.
“We have to start peaking at the right time,” Okimoto said. “This second half leads us into Waianae.”
