The Hawaii Hilo women’s golf team is in 12th place after the first round of the Western Washington Invitational on Monday in Bellingham, Wash. The Vulcans finished with a score of 342, their best 18 holes of the season.
Mariah Paiste leads Hawaii Hilo with a score of 82, followed by Keely Kitamura at 85, Kristeena Locke (87) and Dillyn Sakai (88).
California Baptist leads the field of 13 teams with a score of 298, while Simon Fraser’s Breanna Croxen is atop the individual leaderboard at 79. The invitational concludes today.
Silverswords fall on road to Point Loma
The Chaminade men’s soccer team gave up two goals in less than four minutes as Point Loma shut out the Silverswords 2-0 on Monday in Point Loma, Calif.
Tim Siegfried headed in the first goal in the 23rd minute, while Indiana Fuller followed up with an unassisted goal after stealing the ball from a HPU defender. The Sea Lions (7-2-2, 4-0-2 PacWest) finished with 13 shots, compared to CU’s six. Curtis Coburn and Tyler Ebisuya recorded the only shots on goal for the Silverswords (2-5-1, 1-4-1 PacWest).
On the women’s side, the Silverswords also suffered a shutout to Point Loma, a 3-0 loss on the road. Junior goalkeeper Brandee Lane recorded eight saves for Chaminade (3-6, 2-4 PacWest).
Ashlee Watkins scored twice in the first 13 minutes with assists from Abbey Teagle, and Jessica Taylor scored the third goal for the Sea Lions (4-5-1, 3-3 PacWest) in the first half.
Sharks lose in five sets to Fresno Pacific
Hawaii Pacific’s Perla Escobar put down a match-high 18 kills, but it wasn’t enough to defeat Fresno Pacific in a five-set PacWest conference volleyball match on Monday in Fresno, Calif. The Sharks fell 25-17, 15-25, 25-23, 24-26, 15-9 and are 4-4 in PacWest play, 6-10 overall.
HPU’s Kayley Mohr posted a double-double with 36 assists and 12 digs, while Kayla Demari added 13 kills.
Caroline Bodziak led the Sunbirds (7-10, 5-3 PacWest) with 16 kills and hit .389 in the win.
>> The Chaminade women’s volleyball squad dropped a heartbreaker to Biola, falling 23-25, 25-16, 25-23, 23-25, 15-12 on Monday in La Mirada, Calif. Sophomore outside hitter Emma Tecklenburg recorded a career-high 24 kills for the Silverswords (9-7, 4-4 PacWest), while Kira Long added a season-high 15 kills. Sophomore defensive specialist Nina Torio matched her season-high 18 digs in the loss.
Karly Dantuma finished with a team-high 17 kills for the Eagles (10-5, 4-3 PacWest). Biola outblocked the Silverswords 10-4 and hit .268 compared to CU’s .168 for the match.
>> Hawaii Hilo outside hitter Siera Green hammered a career-high 23 kills in a 25-21, 19-25, 27-25, 25-22 win over Notre Dame de Namur on Monday in Belmont, Calif. Kiley Davis added 10 kills and seven block assists in the win.
Basia Sauni led UHH’s defense with 21 digs and also dished out 31 assists for the Vulcans (7-7, 4-4 PacWest).
NDNU’s Bianca Alvarez tallied 17 kills in the loss, while Kahuku graduate and freshman outside hitter Cheyenne Teo finished with 12 kills for the Argonauts (10-6, 4-4 PacWest).
Vulcans scoop up weekly defensive awards
Hawaii Hilo women’s volleyball player Kiley Davis and women’s soccer goalkeeper Jenna Hufford received PacWest defender of the week honors for their respective sports announced Monday.
Davis, a 6-foot middle blocker, recorded 12 kills and nine blocks, including three solo blocks, in a five-set comeback win at Dominican on Sunday night. The junior transfer hit .333 in the victory and leads the Vulcans with 1.15 blocks per set.
Hufford helped the UHH women’s soccer squad defeat Holy Names and HPU in a pair of shutouts last week. The senior is the PacWest leader in goals against average (0.516) and save percentage (.904). Hufford was previously named defender of the week in 2015 and again in 2016.
>> Hawaii Pacific men’s soccer player Daniel Arnoll received PacWest defender of the week honors for his performance last weekend against Hawaii Hilo and Academy of Art. The senior goalkeeper posted two shutouts and recorded three saves in the Sharks’ homestand.
