Shark prompts Kihei beach closures
Lifeguards briefly closed three Kihei beach parks Wednesday after two beachgoers watched an 8-foot tiger shark within 25 feet of shore swallow a dead bird whole and swim off, the Maui Fire Department said.
Lifeguards warned Kamaole Beach Park II beachgoers at noon of the shark sighting and closed waters off Kamaole parks I, II and III. The waters were reopened at 2 p.m. after the shark was no longer seen.
It was the third shark encounter this month on Maui.
