Two-time Hawaii state high school champion John Oda dropped a third-round 62 on the field at the Web.com first-stage qualifier in San Diego earlier this month, earning medalist honors and advancing to the second stage.
Oda, a Moanalua graduate, turned pro before his senior season this year at UNLV, after earning All-America honors his first three years.
He finished the qualifier with a 72-hole score of 17-under-par 263. Seabury Hall alum Alex Chiarella, who played for the University of San Diego, tied for 15th at 68—273. The top 23 and ties advanced.
Sam Cyr, also from Maui, tied for 38th at 71—282.
The final first-stage events end Friday. Tadd Fujikawa, another Moanalua alum, is tied for fourth halfway through the qualifier in Kannapolis, N.C. He opened with rounds of 66-68. The top 24 and ties advance.
At Dayton, Nev., Lorens Chan (‘Iolani) and Jared Sawada (Mililani) are both in contention. Sawada birdied the final five holes Tuesday to shoot 67, but fell back with a 76 Wednesday. Chan rallied with a second-round 66 after opening with 71 and is in the Top 10.
Second-stage events start Oct. 31 and the final stage is Dec. 7-10 in Chandler, Ariz.
Oda qualified for this year’s U.S. Open and also for the Sony Open in Hawaii in 2012 and 2017. He also earned all-conference academic honors at UNLV, where he majored in economics.
