The Salvation Army recently received a check for $30,398 from City Mill Co. toward hurricane relief efforts.
The money was collected from customer and team member donations totaling $15,398, and a matching $15,000 from the company.
All eight City Mill stores and sister company Simply Organized participated in a fundraiser for Hurricanes Harvey and Irma relief efforts at their checkout registers from Sept. 15 to Oct. 2, according to a Salvation Army news release.
“We are blessed to have local companies like City Mill lead by example and step up to help those in need not only in our local island communities, but across the country,” said Maj. John Chamness, divisional leader for The Salvation Army Hawaiian & Pacific Islands.
Isle students intern in cancer research
Nineteen high school and college students took part in a cancer research internship program at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center from May 30 to Aug. 11.
Started in 2004, the summer program provides valuable research experience and exposes young people to possible careers in the life sciences, a news release said. The projects include focuses such as cancer prevention and control measures, cancer epidemiology, bioinformatics and basic cancer biology. Learn more at uhcancercenter.org.
The interns were chosen out of 74 applicants through a competitive process across the nation. They received a stipend for their work, and over half of them were underrepresented minority students who are interested in pursuing careers in science, the release said. They are funded either by the National Cancer Institute CURE (Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences) supplement, Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance Co. or the Friends of the UH Cancer Center.
Two of the interns are Jommel Macaraeg of Waipahu High School and Daven Ruggles, Kalaheo High. The rest are college undergraduates, all but one from Hawaii, including Larissa Ault (Charter School of San Diego), Ivy Fernandes (Mid-Pacific Institute), Megan Ishii (Punahou), Jethro Macaraeg (Waipahu High), Jasmine Padamada (Keaau High), Phyllis Raquinio (Maui High), Nicholas Siu-Li (Hawaii Baptist Academy), Makana Williams (Punahou), Casie Kubota (St. Andrews), Victoria Mak (Punahou), Lynn Nguyen (Punahou), Mari Ogino (Pearl City), Dylan Combs (Punahou), Connor Goo (Punahou), Nicholas Liu (‘Iolani), Lauren Muraoka (Hanalani) and Dabe Sobol (Punahou).
