Haleiwa’s John John Florence posted the top scores in both rounds on Friday to earn a quarterfinal spot in the Quiksilver Pro France in Hossegor, France.
Florence edged Aussie Ethan Ewing with a score of 19.16 to 14.50 in the seventh heat of Round 3. He followed it with an 18.56 score to top Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson in Round 4.
Kauai’s Sebastian Zietz clinched his heat in Round 3 with a score of 14.33 over Michel Bourez’s 5.73, but fell short in Round 4. Zietz scored a 9.07 behind Marc Lacomare (15.43) and Caio Ibelli (9.87). He will face Australia’s Owen Wright in the first heat of Round 5.
Fresno Pacific stuns Vulcans in five sets
Hawaii Hilo outside hitter Siera Green posted a double-double with 16 kills and 12 digs in a five-set heartbreaking loss to Fresno Pacific, 18-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-15, 15-7, on Friday in Fresno, Calif.
Mina Grant posted a team-high 21 digs for the Vulcans (8-9, 5-5 PacWest), who outblocked FPU 17-9.
The Sunbirds (8-10, 6-3 PacWest) recorded 25 more kills and 22 more digs than the Vulcans in the PacWest Conference match. Karah Mitchell led five FPU players in double-digit kills with 18.
