Enoch Nawahine rushed for 98 yards and a touchdown as No. 2 Kahuku stymied No. 10 Kapolei 35-7 in the quarterfinals of the OIA football playoffs on Friday night at Carleton Weimer Field. Kapolei was hoping to end Kahuku’s 47-game home win streak. The last team to beat Kahuku there was Kapolei, in 2007.

Instead, it was a balanced attack by Kahuku’s offense that kept the visiting Hurricanes on their heels. Red Raiders sophomore Sol-Jay Maiava passed for 149 yards in the first half, including a circus-act play that involved a circular scramble to evade the pass rush and a 21-yard TD pass to Duke Heffernan on the final play before intermission.

Kahuku led 28-7 at the break as Maiava was 15-for-24 without an interception.

“We knew we would need to throw more. Last game, they let me throw more in the second half,” Maiava said. “So they let me have the reins more.”

One of the beneficiaries was Heffernan, a shifty 5-foot-9 receiver who hauled in six passes for 76 yards. He also nailed all five of Kahuku’s PAT kicks.

“That was our game plan,” Red Raiders coach Makoa Freitas said. “We knew it would be tough to run against that front seven of Kapolei, so we were ready.”

Kahuku, 8-0 in league play, moves into the semifinal round. Kapolei (5-5) saw its season come to an end.

The Hurricanes withstood Kahuku’s opening series, forcing a punt, but Kapolei backed itself up on a bad snap, and a 22-yard punt gave Kahuku the ball at the 30-yard line.

Six plays later, Nawahine scored on a 4-yard burst for his first TD.

Kapolei tied the game at 7 with 8:17 left in the second quarter. Sophomore Lonenoa Faoa’s deep post pass to Isaiah Ahana was tipped, bobbled and then hauled in by Ahana in the end zone on a miraculous 25-yard TD.

Kahuku answered on its next series, marching 62 yards in eight plays. Toalei Lefau powered through on a 2-yard run to give the home team the lead for good with five minutes to go in the half. Kahuku opened the lead to 21-7 on a 2-yard run by Lefau with 1:19 left in the half.

The Red Raiders had three interceptions in the second quarter: Kaluna Nihipali, Ratu Tuisavura and Kaonohi Kaniho. The third pick set up the last-second TD pass by Maiava as the half ended.

Kahuku added its final TD on a 12-yard power run by Lefau, a 5-10, 220-pound junior.
