State park to close for repairs

Akaka Falls State Park north of Hilo will be closed beginning Monday for repairs to the loop trail.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources parks division said repair work to the 0.4-mile loop trail is underway after accidental damage was caused in February when invasive albizia trees were removed.

Work is expected to be completed in December at a cost of $297,400.

DLNR said work began last week on a section of trail closed by the damage, with walkways and steps being repaired and railings replaced.

The park will be shut down from Monday through Friday for more work. Afterward, “access to the Akaka Falls lookout area may be interrupted along the shorter, open walkway path, due to equipment and/or material transport to the damaged areas,” DLNR said in a news release.
